You can use a cheap computer for homework, it really doesn't take much power. But gaming takes more power, especially in the video.

What you could do is buy a decent cheap computer with at least 512 MB of RAM memory and then add in a new AGP video card, one that has at least 128MB of on-board memory itself.

Finally, buy a computer that is based either on an Intel processor or an AMD processor.
