is a fictional incantation spoken by characters in Frank Herbert's Dune and sequels in order to focus their minds in times of peril. The litany is as follows:

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain."

That was kind of a joke, but then again, repeating something familiar is very comforting.

I try to deal with fear face on. I use to have a problem with public speaking, so during my high school years I decided to join the debating team. It wasn't all smooth sailing at first. My very first debate I fainted before I walked onto the stage. After a few more attempts I finally got up and accomplished what I intended to do - face my fear of public speaking. After that I have never had a problem with public speaking or talking in front of large groups.

Well you need to state what type of fear. Fear that your not living your life right, is a much different kind of fear than that drunk dill-weed at the end of the bar that is threatening to kick your ****. The first type. to me, seems kind of a fleeting fear that is not worth much quick response though. It is the kind of fear that helps you reevaluate your life and your choices.Hopefully you better yourself after the time spent on analyzing it. The second type of fear, fear for your immediate safety is the one i would like to read the answers for. personally when i encounter that type of fear I quickly try:
1.. to evaluate the reason for it
2..see if there is a way to diffuse or redirect it.
3..calculate the pending damage that will be done.
4.. look to see if there is anyone to help/back me.
5..Put my chin down and let fight or flee response take over.
(I trust #5 most often.)
6.. I do truly believe it what will be, will be. though my reactions influence what will be!

I will just say this - I hate to see people paralyzed by fear in work situations. Fear is for hanging from a cliff, facing down a grizzly bear, or dealing with a loved one who is critically injured or ill. No one should have to fear their boss.
As for how to deal, let prayer and adrenaline do their jobs.

I once attended a class held by Nina Hartley. She said that our bodies react in a particular fashion when faced with a fearful situation. The next step is to recognize that it is the body reacting, not the mind. Once you realize that, you then have the chance to act through what you're feeling and do what needs to be done.

A wise friend once told me this, when I was constantly worried and afraid.

If you can do something to control the outcome of what it is that worries you, then do it, and stop your worrying.

If there is nothing you can do about it, then why worry? What happens, happens.

His advice has helped me keep my sanity through very troubling times.

Fear is a learned response to a thing or situation. The key is to familiarize yourself with that thing and evaluate your response level. And pray. I pray a lot!!

you either run away or you face it. the only way to overcome fear is to face it. maybe youll still be afraid afterwards, but at least then your fear will not overpower you.

it really depends on what your fear is.

I imagine the fear as a wave. I imagine its wake through my body from my heart and radiating outward as it slowly diaaipates. I tried fighting it, holding it in...bad idea. Came out as anger, bitterness, etc...I guess acknowledging it and respecting it just as I would anger, joy, etc.
