If you can hear it booting up but there is no video there are a few things it could be.
1) It could be the backlight has went out. Usually fairly cheap to fix if you get a tech who knows what hes doing.(under $100)
2) The inverter has went out. Again, not to expensive if the tech doesnt spend 3 hours trying to diagnose the problem.(Under $100)
3) LCD panel had died. expensive as hell. Hope you have insurance.($300-800 depending on the screen + labor)
My suggestion would be to find a reputable shop with a tech who knows his way around a laptop (they are harder to find than you would think) and have him/her take a look at it.
EDIT:
Checked online to confirm the inverter and backlight prices as it's been awhile since I was a bench tech and it looks like I was actually a little high. I am not recommending these vendors, I just pulled a couple off the net. Do your own research on that part.
For the Inverter:

For the Backlight:(scroll downto "Mail in LCD Repairs" for pricing)

Do it yourself option: Don't suggest this one unless you have a fairly advance knowledge of at least desktop computer hardware. This link is for a Toshiba but most laptops have the same basic components though they may be arrainged somewhat differently depending on make/model.

Is the screen bad? Is the screen set to try to pick up an external monitor? Take a regular monitor and plug it in. If it works, set the display back to the other screen (right click on an open spot of the desktop, go to properties, then to setttings). If the laptop's screen is what it is set to and it's still black, probably something wrong with the actual laptop screen.

That could be caused by many different problems such as wire shorts, dropping the labtop, or the screen is out and the gel is no longer being attached the screen. Basically your labtop is dead. you can try using the monitor port on the back but as far as the screen on the labtop it's done for.

The problem may be either with your video card or your monitor.
