As large as you can afford. I can almost guarentee that ferret math will hit soon after you get the first fuzzy ;). Don't know what ferret math is? You'll soon find out, lol.
Whatever you do, stay away from Superpet cages!!! You can't even fit a normal sized litterbox in their (even the superpet boxes!). They are a pain to clean and the levels are no fun to pop out for cleaning. I'm speaking from experience, lol. The one level Ferret Nation cage would be perfect for one or two but I'm sure they would love 2 level: http://www.ferretstore.com/thfeho.html . And a 2 level is perfect for when the ferret math hits, my 5 have plenty of room in it (and I LOVE it, so much easier to clean!).
Other good cages are Martins cages: http://www.martinscages.com/products/cages/ferret/ . I haven't had any personal experience with them but I have heard nothing but good reviews of them. I would go with The New Englander and larger.

Many competent pet store owners will know how big the cage should be. Make sure the first thing you do is to do some research on ferrets:living quarters, health, feeding, grooming, etc. Don't go getting a ferret just because it's something "cool" to have. No matter what pet someone wants, they should absolutely look into what it's going to take to properly take care of them. Ferrets are like little kittens that never grow up...very playful...but can get into the smallest and unusual places; if they can get their head in, the rest of the body will follow. Good luck with the ferret.
