m x m = m^2

Exponents are not affected when adding or subtracting whereas they are when multiplying and dividing.

e.g. 2 m x 2m = 4m^2

2m^2 / 2m = 1m

2m^2 + 2m^2 = 4 m^2

4m^2 - 2m^2 = 2m^2
