Think about the things that caused you to write in the first place. Try taking a look at everything around you. Go for a walk. Read a good book. Talk to someone you don't usually talk to. Try listening to music you've never really liked before. Try writing normally, like a short story or a paragraph and see if you can shape that into a poem. Think about something that's bugging you or take a more mature step and think about what OTHERS think about something, like their opinion that is the opposite of yours. Think about why your opinions aren't the same and write about it. Take something no one pays attention to and give it life in your poetry. Take something everyone knows about and change it into something no one's ever thought about in that sense before.

"If you're writing and you get stuck, lower your standards and keep going." -- William Stafford, an excellent poet.

Stafford also said to stop writing when the process of creation becomes work instead of creation.

What helps me sometimes is to do some journal writing. I write what's on my mind and I do not edit. I follow my mind. This doesn't always lead to a poem, but it can open some of the blocks.

Write the poem you've always wanted to read.

Have some fun and try parodying classic styles or writers. Good luck.

Re-read some of your oldest poetry, sitting in a comfortable place. Maybe that will get the juices running again!

Go get involved with some type of human or environmental rights group... sparks a lot of food for thought, plus you're making a difference in the world. These are my two favorites.
