Would you have anything to smile about if you were encased in an aquarium and the only thing you saw when you looked out was a cat or human? Think about that.

I don't know. But to freak them out, put a stuffed shark up to the tank. This always works for me.
EDIT:
Try to get an albino cory. They smile AND laugh.

Fish don't smile,But if you wanna entertain your self then run your finger on the glass and my fish follow.

clip pix of the goldfish crackers and tape them on the outside of the fish bowl. when your fish see those pix they will not just smile, they will also laugh.
