The answers below are just to get faster, but in football, you don't really run a straight line. You need to work not only on speed but on agility also. Workout your legs, pumping weights won't help you, you need leg work, especially a FB.

I think the best way to increase speed is to run a set distance every day ( like 2-6 miles) followed by 40 yd sprint's out of your 3 pt. stance. Good luck!

start walking around in ankle weights. also do some running and drills in them. YOur leg muscles will grow to accomodate the extra weight then when you take them off it will be like you lost 20 lbs but still have the leg muscles to push your old body weight. Also, leg presses and other weight training for your legs will help, as well as just run more, you will get faster the more you run.

Run short bursts, do a lot of cone work, plyometrics. Work on your lateral movement, acceleration, and footwork.
Most importantly be consistent and try and challenge yourself. Do a little bit more each day.

don't do too much long distance though since it can slow you down since you develop slow-twitch muscles. run sprints, work on plyometrics every other day
