Online poker is not rigged. The owner of the major websites do not participate in any type of cheating or rigged system. They'll be in very big trouble if they were, but there is no way that they are willing to risk their company to partake in any cheating.

However, people who play at those sites can cheat.
They can have several players login at same time on same table to play. Then they can IM their friends or call their friends to let them know what they have.

People can also partake in lots of scamming. They can find people's credit card info, register a new account, and play with money they don't own.

You can lose a lot of money, but the smarter players probably won't want to play and lose over a hundred dollars. If they lose, they'll probably want to play for fun or for free first, try to get and understand the players and how the software works before they play for real money.

In addition, if you play for real money, don't just play on any table, the best place to play for money is Multi-Table tournaments. This is better than going to a specific table because the poker company will assign seats randomly. So you are not stuck with people who have played with each others many times. This random position and seating can be safe for you to play against people who are less likely to cheat.

In my opinion, play for free first. Sometimes, free tournaments give you opportunities to go up to the next level to play for prizes and gives you rewards. Don't play online poker for money until you have played for free on those sites.

It all depends on what you want to do with free poker site.
Most of the major ones pokerstars, partypoker, etc offer free play. Sometimes, they offer you money to play for free when you finish off several freeroll tournaments. They have like over 5000 people playing. Usually, if you are really good, you'll end up nicely ranked on those poker sites.
