I broke my apartment stove. Is it at my cost?

I was cleaning the stove and some water(just a little) fell into the burner holes (gas stove) and shorted the whole stove top resulting in a small fire. No other pysical damage happened. Does my landlord have to replace the stove even though I broke it?

The burner holes generally do not run into the ignition circuit. Your stove should not have caught on fire. All that should have happened is that the cooking flame would be blocked until the water evaporated.

I think that the timing of the fire was coincidence. I do not think that you broke it. If just a little water could cause this, then the stove was defective.

Yes, your landlord needs to replace the stove.

It all depends on the language in your lease. I am assuming your stove came with the apartment though. If it didn't it would be your expense.

What I'd really like to know is how you "shorted" out a gas stove???

Don't tell your landlord what happened. Just tell her that it's not working. She will try to get it fixed, then she will buy you another one. Make sure that she buys you a new one; old ones have bugs that will infest your apartment.

Since you have publically admitted liability, of course it's your cost! If your landlord pays for the replacement, and then sees your admission of fault on Yahoo!, he/she will surely sue you for costs & damages!
