I have often thought that this country could truly live up to its potential if we could stop pointing fingers at the other party in an effort to discredit it. What if we could have our cake and eat it to? What if we could take care of the elderly and the poor, give children a decent education, and protect our assets and military? What if we could look accross the globe and do real humanitarian work, not just throw money at corrupt systems and governments? What if we could stop fighting, put some people of color in power, and start living a utopian dream of true freedom, equality for woman and "minorities"? I am starting to reailze that thnking like yours and others is part of a new era where we begin to see the inherent value in each party and bring out the good aspects of each, and abandon the old ways of fighting. Of course a new look on corporate america and foreign policy would have to happen, but I believe a better america waits for those of us who see that there IS enough abundance and goodness left here to make something new and wonderful.

I think it's best to say a well-informed voter will hopefully choose the best candidate for the position in question based on his/her ideals. Every candidate has an agenda and the term "honest politician" is sadly more of an oxymoron than a truth.
The mudraking (or slinging) that you refer to is unnecessary, yet has been occuring since the foundation of this democracy.
I think most people would prefer to have the politicians state what they will do and then do what they say once elected.
The sad thing is, not enough people actually vote (although they're more than willing to express their opinion) because they don't think their vote will count or they don't believe the constituents will do what they say they'll do. Until everyone legally permitted to vote in this country does so and expresses their disgust with the bashing, the bashing you refer to will continue to play out in the media.

The fun in bashing? Its just people stroking their egos.
As for the rest of your question/statements; It's a common political practice to use polarizing tactics (making things that really aren't issues into them, so as to divide the opinions strongly) so they can hide some of their wrong doing right in front of peoples noses.
Look at some of the issues if you don't believe me. Churches and the religious right make abortion an issue. Instead of treating it as an issue of choice, they make it about morality. It's a medical procedure at its core, and people on an individual level should make the choice of whether or not its an option. If you make it about morals though, you can keep the public argueing about that, and hide a law about stripping the courts power to decide on "under god" in the pledge. By focusing people on the insurgents in Iraq, you can quietly sneak in and strip away rights, with no opposition to the police state being created.
Churches and interest groups shouldn't be given a bigger voice than the people who voted. Systems such as the electoral college shouldn't be in place,as they currently are, to keep the power in the hands of the individual. Public office was considered a personal sacrifice many, many years ago. Now its a cushy job with benefits from everybody who wants something, and has the power to buy it. Most democrats won't admit it, but they're as far out of touch with the average American as the republicans.
It would be nice to see some big changes in the gov't, but when the majority of the population only gets there news from one or two sources, they're only seeing one side of the story.

I have to say that I agree with you. Unfortunately, I'm not as optimistic as you are though. I think you're right to say that we should vote out every incumbent, and it would be nice if we could vote in someone who would represent the people instead of their own interests. Here's where my pessimism comes in.....I think that, even if someone has good intentions, they will eventually start to work for their own interests. It's the way the system is set up. I know it's broken, but I can't figure out how we can fix it.

Absolutely. You should see my latest question. I ask nearly the same thing. What kind of example are these people showing? What do they hope to prove? That would be why I don't ask such taunting questions...
Though I have been known to tell a person that they need to quit saying they're a Democrat or a Republican because neither political party would want to claim them.

40 years of failed liberalism means we can disqualify them from any further involvement in our affairs. they should be relegated to
the construction of compost toilets and picking vegetables
in my opinion democrats have been infiltrated by the American communist party - unfortunately the Reps aren't much better.
liberals ( dems) are failed Americans - they believe in the collectivist view on responsibility and accountability - they won't admit their philosophy is a sham because in my opinion they are mind diseased spirochetes. In my opinion anyone who thinks partial birth abortion is acceptable under any circumstance is a spirochete liberal
(your pal clinton prayed about it and GOD said " it is okay")
gun control is the next issue - new york and washington dc have the highest crime rates in america and they have the toughest gun control laws which dont work.
But they still champion the cause of removing guns from fellow citizens( whom they deem to be inferior).
dems have a horrible track record in foreign policy
dems appeal to the bottom feeders through race baiting and class war fare.
Dems voted for clinton once
Dem's voted for clinton twice
they would have done so again if he had been able to run for office a 3rd time
their domestic polices have collapsed - public housing welfare etc
they are all for the public education system controlling the mind of young people in spite of teen pregnancy and illiteracy - they hate vouchers for private school choice because some body might teach the lads about abstinence and that they did not evolve from mud or monkeys.
There are 80,000 registered sex offenders in Calif - recycled by a liberal court system. how many rapist and murders have been propagated by a failed court system operated by 40 years of liberalism - ask the father of Polly Klaus if you dont believe me
liberals spend money they don't have (politician)
liberals spend money they did not earn (constituent)
Since being on this sight liberals have done nothing but bush bash complaining that he spent alot of money this is total HYPOCRACY dems have made a career out destroying our budgets
the list goes on
this is just an abbreviated note I could write a novel

Having one parent be conservative and one be liberal, I hate politics from the bottom of my heart. Both my parents tried to recruit me at one point, and my father still does today. The problem is, the slipery slope theory is making both parties more and more extreme. We are being taught that extremism is the only way to win politically, and that is why politics sucks. You can't break people from their beliefs, so don't even try.

bashing is all about a lack of respect. political bashing would satisfy our reptilian instincts. of course it is very hard to resist. i think your onto something when you appeal to moderate voters. my thought is to encourage viters to ignore every political commercial they are exposed to this election cycle and let themselves be drawn towards the most middle of the road candidate they can find, incumbent or not. it would be reallly nice to have a congress filled to the gills with moderates for a change.

Nice sentiment, but impossible under the present system. You need to support public campaign finance initiatives in order for there ever to be a possibility of this happening.
