Baby RES's need more protein than adult ones. They dig the protein and become picky eaters as adults. It's okay to feed your baby turt commercial bug guts, but I wouldn't jump on the roach wagon for fear of pesticides. Same thing with worms from your yard. It may be harmless, but buying food from the pet store is safer.

You can, but you are taking a chance at poisoning your turtle. If you know the roaches etc. have not died from insecticides it is likely okay. But if you are unsure it is better to stick to critters known to be safe and pesticide free.

Turtles select prey based on relative size. A potential prey animal that is too small or too big will be ignored since the animal knows that it is not to their benefit to hunt them.

For a baby turtle, big bugs are simply too big.
