I'm going to be a sophomore in highschool now. Freshman year, I ran a 54.8. I'm planning on running atleast a 52 this upcoming year.
Also, how do you guys run a 400m? I first tried doing a tactical approach to it by running out hard the first 200m, slowing down the last curve, and kicking the last straightaway. But I only got a 58 doing that. Now I just run it as hard as I can the whole way.

I think for a high school you are striving for the right time, but you try to run it in about 50 seconds. I've ran track from the ninth grade to the twelth graed and i am about to run track for the four years i'm in in college. in the Olympics the actuall time would be around 43.something seconds, so whatever you do strive for the best time you could possible do.

54.8, not too bad as a frosh...I ran than 220/440 in high school and my bests were:

220 - 21.7
440 - 48.3

The way I improved (aside from training) was breaking the race into splits. I ran the first 220 as hard as I could without emptying my "tank", something like a 90% effort and I'd usually go by 220 in about 22.5 ~ 22.6.

Once I entered the curve, I'd run it as hard as I could while maintaining my form because that's the point in the race where a lot of novice runners (or those not in top condition) would let up. I'd usually exit the curve and into the straight with a 5 yard lead or more. Once I was at 330 yards, is when the lactic acid kicked in (also known as "the Bear" or "rigor mortis") and that's when I'd work to keep as relaxed as I could so my form wouldn't break down. I'd end up closing in about 26 to 27 seconds.

Once you've gotten in the BEST condition you can get, this is not as hard as it seems. You can shut down at about 400 yards (360 meters) and coast. If it's a close race, then leave it on the track, that means give it EVERYTHING you have and run through the finish. Yes, I've done it, it hurts like hell and I've tossed my cookies afterwards, but you can say you gave it your all...

The 400 is the STUDs race, no doubt. The best athletes on the track are usually the guys running the 400...
