If it is a regular ION sedan or quad coupe, 87 octane is fine... any higher is a waste.
HOWEVER if it is the supercharged ION RedLine you need to use premium octane gas... consult the owners manual. Also if it's a RedLine you need to use Mobile1 synthetic oil for the oil changes. (Again consult the manual)

Use what the owner's manual recommends or consult a dealership. It's not a good idea to use a higher grade if a lower grade is called for. It can cause problems like fouled spark plugs, etc.

Your car owners manual answers that question for you. They built the car to run on the fuel with the listed octane rating in the manual.

Read the manual. You want the lowest octane that doesn't allow your engine to ping. Anything higher is a waste.

Regular octane is fine. High octane is usually meant for high performance or german vehicles. Summer time, ethanol is in the fuel and supposedly for the environment.
