National Lampoon is more like a brand, I guess you might call it. There was at one point a National Lampoon magazine, there used to be a National Lampoon Radio Hour (it was a total riot!), and of course, the various movies that you're probably aware of. National Lampoon was into skit satire long before anyone else was, and they do it extremely well.

National Lampoon Magazine was, at its height, the premiere adult comedy magazine. There were several regular features, such as "Letters from the Editors", and regularly appearing characters, not a few of which were made into movies no one saw, such as "O.C. and Stiggs". While "O.C. and Stiggs" was lame, anyone who read the NatLamp's chronicle of their perverted adventures could never forget them. Most of the editors and contributing writers also were members of the Firesign Theater comedy troupe, which also boasted Gilda Radner and Bill Murray as members.

The first movie the NatLamp team did was "Kentucky Fried Movie", although it was not an 'official' Nation Lampoon movie. Then the Editor in Chief of NatLamp, Doug Kenney, appeared in "Animal House", as Stork. Then he co-wrote "Caddyshack". Then, the actual NatLamp team got together for the forst "Vacation" movie, starring Chevy Chase. Of course, the movie made a ton of money, so they ran out a quickie sequel, "National Lampoon's European Vacation", and so on. Now they put their NatLamp name on anything that's vaguely comical and shows bare female breasts.

Kevin Curran of "Married With Children" fame was also an Editor for NatLamp. Harold Ramis was a contributing writer.

In the 80s, Political Correctness was rearing its ultra-sensitive head and National Lampoon the magazine was seeing the beginning of the end. The magazine finally stoppped printing sometime in the late 80s I believe.
