'Yes and No.
1. We are here to glorify God.
2. That includes taking care of family and needs which are presented to you.
It does not include attempting to eliminate suffering with social services, religious programs, governmental handouts etc., and etc. If number 1 and number 2 were ever taken care of, there would be very little need for anything else.
Jesus said, "You have the poor with you always." so you will always have opportunity to assist any time you want.
Of course most of the world doest believe this nor the economic fact I just quoted.
Your question is logical. If we were put here to help others than some had to be put here that needed help. The truth is that all of us came in without God and are in need of help. This is not some big educational complex for spiritual advancement. It is a trap to be seen and escaped from with anybody you might persuade to go with you.

Not everyone have the chance to help someone. You are lucky if you are able to help someone, that means to say that you are able. The others are not so lucky like you, they are unable so they need people like you and me to help them. Helping other is a fulfillment that words can't describe. I learn that from my son, he goes to old forks home to chalk with old people and he will return with sparks in his eyes and grow on his face. The happiness comes from within.
