I have only met a few Russian "gopnik" (I believe that's the word) and from what I understand of the Russian mafia, members of this organization are as mean as hungry wolverines in a chicken coop. HOWEVER, the two "gang-bangers" I know are strangely "honorable" which is scary in its way: they bend over backwards to express friendship and goodwill to me, but I've also heard stories of the violence they're capable of. But I think Russian mafia-members are like people everywhere; we hear horror stories about them, and some of them may be true, but there are Mafiosos everywhere, there are gang-bangers everywhere, and as long as members of the Russian mafia don't tell me that I need to "buy a roof" I don't make it a habit to worry too much. But since you don't have to be a mafia-member to do heinous things, I don't single THEM out whenever something heinous happens (unless, of course they DID it.) As for getting rid of the Mafia...? Yeah, Russia should, but in order for the Mafia to be done away with, life has to get to the point where committing crime is NOT more lucrative than being honest.
