I'm pale white, so white I seem to glow sometimes. Anyway, I want to get a decent tan so I was out in my backyward for several hours today playing ball and other things. I get a pretty severe sun burn. I've been reading a lot of people saying that tanning in the sun can do a lot of stuff to your skin like make it leathery, wrinkly, and give you skin cancer. If I use sun-tan lotion everytime I go out can I get a good tan safely without the danger of cancer or any of those things? I don't know if this helps but I'm 15, I have green eyes, brown hair, and freckles. (but only on my face) Thanks.

Hello dear, many people would probably tell you even not to expose to the sun. Well, I am your type and my skin is pale white, I live near the beach and every summer I enjoy the great weather and sunbathing. You must remember TWO major things:First, use a very good brand of sun protection lotion/milk/spray/oil, etc.,assure yourself that the SPF is not less than 15 or even 30 if you really easily get sunburn (also it'll be good if the product is enriched with vitamins, Aloe Vera, etc). Second: use the sun from 8 to maximum 11.30 at noon and in the afternoon aways after 3 or 3.30. Don't forget after that to apply suitable after-sun balm/gel/milk, again with Vitamins(especially E and A), Aloe Vera and plenty of moisturisers. Good luck! Enjoy well

No, there is not a safe way to tan. I am blond with blue eyes and it took me until I was 30 to be able to get a farmers tan. One of the keys to how bad it can be for you is that people with freckles tend to burn easier. Using sun screen while enjoying the outdoors is always a good idea. I am currently living in Oklahoma and the number of older people with bad looking skin because sun exposure is great.

Don't tan at all.
reasons not to tan:
1. tanning may cause skin cancer.
2. Tanning certainly will cause wrinkles and pre-mature aging. You might not care now but when your older you will WANT TO LOOK YOUNGER you will not want to look like your 48 when your really 38.
3. lightskin looks great years ago it was the most desired skin type becuase tanned skin is dammaged skin and only low class people like road workers and construction people had sun burns.
4. Austrilans are educated in sun protection, the have an ozone whole above them and media regually informs them of the dangers. THEY STAY OUT OR WEAR SUN BLOCK.
Your choice you have to be confident in nyour own skin. Thats what matters.

No, because if a sun tan lotion has an SPF low enough to give you a tan, then it is not very effective and doesn't do much to keep you safe.
There is really no safe tan, unless you use one of those fake tanning lotions, which look pretty bad anyway...

Take care of your skin - you will appreciate it later in life. Wear at least a SPF 30 whenever you will be exposed to stong sunlight.
Appreciate the fact that people have different skin tones and yourself is the most important.
If you must tan - want a healthy glow - go to a fake-n-bake (tanning parlor) but space your visits out by a week or so.

Sun baking, with or without the lotion, you have no danger of the skin cancer. At sun light, you wear long sleeve shirt and long trouser or skirt, protect you from direct sun burnt. In Africa or compared to the farmers, they worked long hours everyday with no shade, most of them didn't have the skin cancer. So no need to fear of skin cancer while only sometimes of exposion to the sun.

Any tan is a sign of sun damage. Use sun block and a hat, and don't spend more time in the sun than needed, especially in the middle of the day.

Only if your sun tan lotion is like spf 50 and you reapply every hour. I'd rather be pale than have skin cancer...
