Ben Franklin who was by self-definition a deist but by practice an agnostic. He was decidedly NOT Christian by the way he lived his life.

If I remember my history lessons he was talking about those individuals who were Loyalists to the King of England. They were giving up their liberties, their inherent freedoms, so that the British would leave them be, leave them in peace and not attack them.
