I'm going to The University of Texas to study Biomedical Engineering. I got a scholorship to do engineering, and my family is full of engineers---they are all civil, petrolium, mechanical, or industrial.
I was wondering where I could be employed, and how much money will I make (a range). I'm planning to go back to school for another four years to do Optometry, but if I could do well in Biomedical maybe I'll just stick with that. Thanks

The amount of money you will make is dependent on the field of business (medical devices or drugs) and what the size of the company you are going to. Mostly small start-up companies pay a little better and offer great stock options. I work for a large biomedical device company (>20,000 employees). The pay for a entry level biomedical engineer is between 60K and 80K, dependent on field of expertise and the company's need for your skills.

Biomedical engineering is a great field that exposes you to many different aspects of the trade, separate from what you study in school. The main difference is that in school you are researching for a grade, but in the business, you are researching to save lives. It sounds corny, but it is very true.

Maybe you could go to your advisor or career counselor at the college and they can give you more information about what life will be like after college. You could even try to network with individuals who are already working in the engineering field. Maybe they would be willing to talk to you about job specifics and you could get a better feel for what your future will be like in a particular engineering field. Also you could try Salary.com to get a rough estimate of what kind of salary you should expect at a certain job in a certain location. I imput some of the information you posted and came up with a starting salary of $40,000. Hope that helps. :-)

A 4 year degree won't get you much. Optometry is better idea!

The closest I can come is a friend of mine is a Bio Physicist with a PHD and among the things he does is make "clone" carrying cases at home in his spare time, which he sells for $500 each.
