Does anyone know? You name something that you think is real; the truth is that it's meaningless. The proof is when you die, none of which you mention will bring you back. Or vise versa.

We didn't ask to be born. We believe what we are told. We really don't know a thing. We just assume we know. Know one even knows why we are here. We just reproduce like flowers.

I think reality is anything you can see, touch feel or smell! If you see something with your own eyes you know it's for real, even an illusion is real when you see it , isn't it?{hmm} The object of the illusion might not be real.{ In the illusion, it's real but in reality it's not} The illusion in itself is real cause you're experienceing it by site! The illusion becomes "reality" because you visualize it and the object is meaningless because in a illusion there is no "real" object just imaginary imaging. When you touch and feel something with your hands , it may or may not be real {alive} but it does exist in reality at that moment doesn't it? If it has a purpose it can't be meaningless can it?Even a staionary object a chair isn't real but its serves it's purpose so you can't say it's meaningless can you? Smells? You can tell the difference between them and therefore know that they exist at least in your mind they do, that's reality! The first time a baby moves in it's mother's womb, that's reality, she becomes aware that there is a being that's growing and waiting to be brought into the world by taking it 's first breathe and crying. Reality is knowing that someday we will all die . Uncertainty is the reality of what becomes of us after death. If you believe in God then you believe there will be a here after.and that you will be brought back to life, and that brings meaning to this life. If not the only thing that matters is the here and now and you my friend have the choice of whether or not it becomes "meaningless" or not!

First, let me commend you, because you have asked the first question a conscious person will ask. Anyone who has failed to answer the question to their own satisfaction, and instead relies upon the reassurances of others that what is real is what is in front of one's face, is only sleepwalking.

Your initial question is valid. Your reply("You name something that you think is real; the truth is that it's meaningless") is not, and the flaw within it is responsible for the confusion you suffer. Let me explain:

You said, "You name something that you think is real; the truth is that it's meaningless." What you did by making this statement was to offer a proof that there is nothing real. The problem is that the outcome of your proposition depends on the meaning that is given the phrase "the truth is". Because the meaning of the words "real", and "truth" are interchangeable, what you have essentially done is to state, "There is nothing real because there is nothing real." This is what is known as "circular reasoning".

The "real" question beneath your question is this: Why am I chasing my own tail until I am dizzy? The hard answer is that someone is filling you full of ****. Whether it is your parents, girlfriend, friends, boss, etc., someone is getting over on you. Someone is putting the idea that you don't know what you are talking about into your head. You are unconsciously aware of the fact, but you needed confirmation in order to bring it to your conscious attention. Rest assured, someone is filling you full of ****. It might even be me.

I think what is real is what works in life. You are sad because you are identifying with what is not real, things in your life are not working. You are frustrated, not doing what is real in your own heart. You must learn to listen to yourself. Actually, you do know the answers to your own questions about the reality of life. You know when you are really hungry, don't you?
Well, if you have never been really hungry, try to not eat anything, just drink water for as many days as it takes for you to get really hungry. Then, you will know one thing that is real. Hunger.
You probably have a lot of hunger in your life, hunger for what you know very well you want. Get off the computer, go pick up a pen and some paper. Write down ten things that you really want to do. These things are real. Why haven't you done them? Well, start.
Pretty soon, after you are busy doing everything on your list you will not feel so sad. Go on, try it, what have you got to lose? This works for me, in my life it is real, this finding out what I want and then doing it.

Man are you shortchanging the meaning in life!
Your statements by assumption give others simply way too much power over you.
God gave us our own individual minds to decide what info to accept and which to reject.
I don't know about you but I know for a fact that when I die, many of my beliefs and feelings about things will live on.
The love and consideration I treat people with will be passed on and on throughout countless generations.
My love of animals and people and plants will live on through the souls I have touched while I was here.
you make memories everyday, are you really going to sit there and tell me that the memories you create are meaningless to virtually everyone?

Come doo, noone is that cynical.

Reality is very difficult to define. Plato said that we all live in a world of shadows, we live in a cave, in the dark and the we don't even realise it. Those few who manage to get out of the cave and see the sun see what's real. But they when they return to the cave they will never be understood by the others. Lacan claimed that the real is our self being, our object of desire that we cannot see, we can only feel. We cannot gain objective knowledge of the real unless we split from the real itself. Today quantum physicians claim that reality is the product of our conscious, the image you create in your mind. And there are probably many other theories as well.
So you decide which theory you find most acceptable.

i get your point.

ditto. maybe nothing IS real.

the thing is we're only told what we're supposed to do and therefore our choices are not real.

the thing that we see "reality" is only what others want us see.

remember that the eyes see things as backwards, so are these things really backward or are they not, the only reason we think that it is not backwards because that is what we have always believed in.

and maybe all the questions that we do ask have no real answers, they're just believable; but they're not real...

remember this:

THE TRUTH IS JUST SOME CONVENIENT FICTION...

One day you might find yourself in a foxhole, or with a mugger aiming a gun in your face, and you will realise the answer.
