Heya, Silver Star.

You've probably heard that predicting the path of a hurricane is very difficult beyond a few days. True.

The computers have become darn good at it, though, and their accuracy out to about 5 days (in advance) is pretty amazing now compared to just a few short years ago.

That said, Chris is currently forecast to be doing the old "splitting the uprights" act by passing right between FL and Cuba Sunday night/Monday.

If that verifies, Chris will be out in the warm waters of the Gulf (GoM), and it's pretty much impossible to say where he will head from there.

Now that we're into August, the GoM now has sea surface temperatures (SST's) warm enough to support a cat5 'cane.

Other factors determine the ultimate fate of Chris besides just SST's, however; upper level wind shear primarily.

But that's not what you were really asking, was it? You were asking for people to place their bets! :D

None of the meteorological models show much for this system, at least so far. The NHC people said today it will become a hurricane and enter the Gulf of Mexico; that caused the price of oil to shoot up. Right now the forecast calls for it to hit Cuba, and it won't become a hurricane. This should cause oil prices to fall tomorrow.

Well I live 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico in a place called Bay City, Texas. We were evacuated last year due to Rita. I hope and pray that it somehow turns and heads back out to sea.

usually it depends where the HIGH pressure system(s) are sittign near there. hurrincanes could be pushed off track by a high pressure system. also the water temperature, if it gets into cooler waters then the storm will dissipate.I havent seen the news yet so i dont know where its going to hit.
