He told his viewers to edit the "elephant" entry to say the population of elephants has tripled over the past 10 years. Many viewers subsquently did so. Now wikipedia has locked its elephant page from editing because of that.

It's the risk you have to take having an encyclopedia composed by your average joes. I wouldn't trust that wikipidia for anything except entertainment purposes.

He didn't tell his viewers to do it - he pretended to do it on the show. There's a difference, though maybe slight.

Nonetheless, I don't think he was wrong to do it. He was clearly joking - all his show is a joke - and people really need to learn to take him as the comedian he is. Besides that, maybe this will be a wake up call to all the people who take Wikipedia entirely too seriously.

Stephen Colbert is never wrong. People just need to realize it's a joke and not to take everything you see on a HUMOROUS newscast seriously.
