I like to write vignettes/essays (not really short stories, more like David Sedaris stuff, only not as long). How I take the first step to looking into publishing?

Send something suitable to all your "local" weeklies, most of them have a page that invites Sedariseque wring, if not Sedariseque quality! Once you have your first piece published, you can use that as a credential to get the next piece published.
Don't get discouraged, don't stop writing, don't stop reading. And remember, anyone that will give you money will only do so because they believe they can make MORE money but publishing what you have written.

Good luck!

Consult a Writer's Market book found in your local library or book store. Match your essay or vignette with what the agents or publishing houses are looking for and then check out their Web site for submission guidelines.

Next, format your manuscript in accordance with their submission guidelines such as, double spacing, name, address, phone number, e-mail address, word count, and genre that is on the front cover page.

Last, edit it for grammar, punctuation, and correct spelling at least five times. Have different editors check it out for you as each one thinks differently about what they read.

Good luck.
