The way I look at it is that spelling is important but so are a lot of other things in our complex world.

Spelling is often used as an argument against the younger generations by older people who went to school in a less complex world with less to learn. So they spent more time on spelling and while their spelling is better than some kids today they are also not as skillful in a lot of other things.

Fortunately we have spelling checkers. Notice the "Check Spelling" button in the top right of your post input box?

But when kids type in "u r" for "you are" that is not a spelling issue but a typing issue. It would be nice if they learn how to touch type so that they don't have to condense their typing strokes.

But, YES, it is nice when kids can imporve their spelling.

That's my guess... Only an ignorant idiot would think that ignorance and idiocy don't matter.

Cuppa - you have pretty much proven my point... Accuracy is more imprtant than speed.
You should start taking some pride in your work before you actually hit the workforce, unless you're one of those pierced people with a tramp stamp or two and your career is going to be "Would you like fries with that?"

With so many systems out there that do spell check it, there really is no reason for not being able to spell. I don't think it's due to people not being able to read I think it's more due to laziness and not caring about what you write and how it comes out.

Yes, that has been my experience. However, those people that you are referring to have no understanding that they are spelling incorrectly. Many of them may be graduates of the whole language school of learning where if you think that cat is spelled kad then go ahead and spell it that way because you will be graded A for effort. Welcome to the results of THAT failed experiment.

Very wrong. I read very very fast and I find that bad spelling is a sign of low intelligence and laziness.

I think your part right. I think people are also lazy. That's the same reason why people don't turn on their turn signal while changing lanes and other things like that.

Spelling does count.
