Promethazine (Phenergan) is an anti-emetic, it helps to control nausea and vomiting. I don't believe that it is really useful for pain if given alone, but if given with a narcotic analgesic (morphine, demerol, etc) it has a synergistic effect with the narcotic analgesic. The pain will be more relieved than if the narcotic analgesic were given along. It also helps to prevent the nausea that sometimes happens when narcotics are given.
Only take Phenergan under the direction of a doctor. Some people are allergic to it. Also, the doctor may be able to prescribe something for you that will help relieve your pain better then what you may be able to come up with at home.
