Well, that depends on what you mean by provoke. The reason the U.S. was attacked on 9-11 is multifaceted- it is primarily because the neoconservative executive administration of George Bush, widely supported by pro-zionist lobbying groups, does not wholly support the full and immediate establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. Also, it is the culmination of centuries of colonialism by the West in the region: before the U.S. was there, the English and French were. The U.S. has supported unpopular political entities, including the Shah of Iran and (before 1990, when oil interests were compromised:) Saddam Hussein. Also, one of the groups with which Bush has some degree of affiliation, the Project for the New American Century, released a document in 2000 indicating a need to establish an American dominated regional hegemonic influence through military means in the Middle East. This may well have been perceived by Al Qaeda to be an indication of future events, hastening their desire to strike.
Ultimately, there is no indication that we directly provoked the attacks, it is more an instance of "the straw that broke the camel's back" with history, perceived ideology, and religious factors serving as the contributing agents to the ultimate result.

I believe that whether they intentionally mean to or not, the US is the largest antagioniser globally. They symbolize the growth of capitalism, democracy, "freedom", wealth and power, which 90% of the world do not have access to. Through progression and globalisation is has made itself stand out amongst the rest of the world as being at the forefront of the world. Any perceived provocation then could possibly have just been an adverse reaction to their status as the worlds only superpower.
I believe however there are so many unanswered questions regarding 9/11, I question whether they had some influence over what happened that day. For instance the passport of the terrorist. It managed to fly out of the plane fall 90 stories and coincidentally land at the feet of an agent? And it was undamaged? Happy coincidence I hope, but unlikely. The documentary Loose Change and many other research websites just highlighted flaws in the scheme of things as to what really happened that day. But then, thats for another thread.
I think that both sides are then at fault. The extremists who committed the attacks allegedly for their wish to bring down the US economy, but I think it was the US that made themselves the specific target. The terrorists wanted to bring down the most powerful economy and country in the world and if that was the UK or Russia then could it be assumed that they would have been targetted too. I dont believe 9/11 was just Anti-American, it was Anti-Globalisation, and if you have the means just destroy the top - in this case, the US.

No sane person can justify the murder of almost 3,000 people.
Some people would try to say that American foreign policy is the reason for 9-11, but this and any other pretext, are not rational reasons for mass slaughter. Fanatical Islam is a faith of hate and nobody can justify this event. What if your mother or child were killed in the attacks, would anyone say, that it was my governments policies that caused this loss? I think not. The problem is hate in the name of God, not flimsy excuses. Islam is a male dominated religion, that can be used to further the goals of antisemitism and those that hate Christians. Basic Democracy and human rights are in danger from radical Islam and we all are in danger.

If being the number one nation in the world and telling the rest of the world about then yes I guess they did provoke the attacks. Because the US gets involved as numero uno into alot of the disputes around the world any terrorist gets a feather in his cap if he can strike a blow like 911. Too bad everyone on board those planes died it would have been interesting to see what one of the terrorists who didn't know he was going to die would have said about it all. With no witnesses it was sort of like the perfect crime from the terrorist side of things. No witnesses, no traces, no survivors.

Provocation is a volatile term with respect to terrorism. I don't think the US has been alone in support of Israel, or in opposition to terrorism undertaken, historically, by Palestinian elements, Chechen elements, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc etc. HOWEVER, the US and its allies do seem to be the target in almost every terrorist attack of late.
The US does represent wealth, personal freedoms, in some minds they represent open and unapologetic acceptance of 'decadence', which is juxtaposed to Islamic tenets.
But if one believes the US 'asked for it', that is simpliy ludicrous. Many Christians, Jews and Muslims died on 9/11/01. As with all terrorism, there is no precision, only carnage, always senseless.

Provoke the 9--11 attacks?
Most certainly not.
Islamic extremists do not need to be "provoked," they are pro-active in their attempts to terrorize and kill, in the name of Islam.
They are willing to kill themselves, in order to carry out their ideology. (convert or kill, all infidels. so that Islam can rule the world.)
They are not bound by any rules of military engagement.
Hezbollah, Hams, Al Qaeda, etc...are "groups of terrorist organizations," ( not military entities) that are located all over the world, acting in accordance with each other, and
in the name of Islam.(Mohammad)
Their allegiance is to Islam (Mohammad) not a country.

It is not up to us to decide if we provoked the attacks. It is up to the "villains" to decide if we have bullied & belittled thier lives & feelings. In other words we would have to be nieve to think we haven't pissed off about one third of the planet and not expect some repurctions.
