In Star Trek Next Generation, what is the bump on Data's (Brent Spiner) back?

Starting in about the 4th season or so, Data (Brent Spiner) had something under his uniform, a bump of some kind, on his back. It appeared that it wasn't always in the same place and I can't for the life of me figure out what it was.

Can anyone help?
