I am starting to work tommorow in a mortgage office doing telemarketing. It is more of a dressy type environment being its a mortgage office. I am wondering if it would be too warm to wear a pair of black velvet pants and a sleeveless dressy top and/or would it be too dressy? also would a cute black sleeveless dressy top and a pair of tan capris and black sandles look funny together as a 2nd option. I live in California so keep in mind it does get hot here.

you cant weear the capris or the sandals
vlevet pants WILL be too hot. bite the bullet, whip out the credit card and go shopping- if you need to keep the budget low end, go to walmart- im not being sarcastic. i filled out my wardrobe very nicely there when i got started in financial services- same thing, dressy kinda office, i had no money. you will in a little while, dont worry- mortgages close and youll make some money in a feew months. for now, just get some suits, light, cause its LA and summertime. youre gonna have to shop. those clothes dont sound right. youre gonna need some real suits to get you through the next few weeks till you close somethingandm ake some dough- dont worry about brand names, just get something presentable that you mix n match- but not with sandals
or capris

I say keep the tops and go shopping for more casual but fresh bottoms of colors other than black because, as you said yourself, it is hot in Califorrnia. Try thin fabrics but not too thin that it's see-through. I think it's ok that you wear a sleeveless top as long as it's dressy and you bring a jacket, because it will probably get cold in the office with the a/c and everything and you will probably be in there all day. Also the jacket might serve as a cover up for the tops, so you don't look so, for lack of other words, uncovered. A longsleeve blazer would work just fine . Sandals are ok as long as they're high heels or wedges. And stop buying black clothing, remember the climate is always HOT, HOT, HOT.
P.S: You can wear black in winter, but right now, we're in the middle of summer, so I don't recommend wearing black to work. The people that work with you will look at you like you're crazy.

be careful with sleeveless tops, some offices don't allow it, best to wear something with sleeves for your first day, look professional and business like till you find out what the dress code is. Some offices don't even like open toed shoes or require pantyhose when wearing dresses or skirts. So be safe for your first day, that first impression might make all the difference. It shouldn't, but it does.

As far as the black velvet pants, not sure how business like they are, but if the office allows it, by all means, go for it. If the office is air-conditioned, you don't have to worry too much about the heat, in fact, some offices keep it so cold (like mine) you have to keep a light sweater at your desk. The only thing you'll have to worry about is when you go outside. If the office lacks artificial air, then velvet pants might be a problem and you don't want to sit in your sweat all day!!

Keep it safe, go for the classy, business office look for your first day because though it's a free country, in some places, we CAN'T wear what we like.

well i think that one if your are comfortable in any of thoes outfits then go for it. keep in mind that any type of black pants are going to be hot in. but on the other hand this is a free country and you can therefore where what you like. think about what everyone else was waring when you went to your interview???? maybe that can give you some ideas. and since you'll be inside you can get away with waring pants because it will probably have AC. and for sure after your first day at work , after seeing what everyone else is waring you'll know the limits and what not to the dress code.

If you r in cali. you should never wear velvet pants in the summer. Now you could wear some black or white linen pants, wide leg, bacause they r light and you won't sweat in them and they r dressy. With a sleevless top not to dressy and not to casual. and dressy slip on shoes you know work shoes

velvet pants in california seems like it would get pretty warm if you ask me. but does the office have ac? i would wear black straight-legged capris and a dressy top, but if you dont have that and dont feel like going out to get new clothes, your second outfit sounds like it would be good too. after the first day you'll be able to better prepare youself. good luck! =]

I'm in Cali, and I think you're second outfit is the best choice. Velvet in the summertime is way to hot. However, you might want to wear dressier shoes for your 1st day. But I think sandles would also work. Good Luck!!
