Goldfish excrete too much ammonia for other fish to handle. Specially bettas since they are sensitive to dirty water and their fins rot easily. Bettas are warm water tropicals and do not do well in the cooler temps that goldfish need. Bettas and goldfish also have different dietary needs, bettas needing more protein since they are carnivores. Goldfish also get alot larger. 12-14 inches and adult goldfish will need 50 gallons PER fish, baby to juvenile fancy goldfish need 10 gallons PER fish, and baby to juvenile long bodied goldfish (comets, commons, shubunkins) need 20 gallons PER fish.
Male bettas have longer fins. Female bettas have shorter fins and a small white dot on her belly called an ovipositor. There are short finned males called Plakats, so look for the ovipositor if you are not sure if the short finned betta is a male or female.

A male betta is the "pretty" one, with the long flowing fins. A female does not have the pretty fins...they look kinda stubby. A male and female just like two male bettas cannot be in the same tank together. The two male's will attack each other, and the female will attack the male.
The can live with goldfish.

It Male Betta 's fins are at least double his body size and the female Betta's fins are less than half her body size.
Goldfish perfer lower water temptures than tropical fish (Betta is a tropical fish). Goldfish are also a very dirty fish they produce a lot of waste. The betta is an air breather and can live in small bolds.

The way to tell a male and female betta fish apart is that a male's fins are longer and the females are generally less colorful. No, goldfish cannot be in the same tank as betta they fight. Here is a site I find helpful with my betta fish: http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm

This is horribly easy, Female Betta fish have much shorter fins, and arent as colorful as the males, but they are also mild mannered.
Betta fish are sort of aggressive, you can try to put them with goldfish, but after the betta instigates, the goldfish will more likely try to protect itself by attacking it every time it sees the other fish.

Male - long colorful, flowing fins
Female - dull colors (the ones i've seen are mostly white), and have small fins, easily distinguishable.

No, you cannot keep bettas and goldfish together, males are generally agressive toward other fish and then the fact remains that bettas are Tropical water fish, goldfish are Cold water fish.
So both need different temperatures.

Male Bettas are the more colorful of the sexes, and have the long flowing fins everyone identifies with Bettas. Females have short fins, and are their colors are more drab, although some are quite colorful http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/qa/f/faq0005.htm

Betta's are peaceful despite the fight to the death attitude they have with each other. More experienced fish people can add a betta to a tank with other peaceful fish types like danios, minnows, guppies and plecos but caution is required as some of these may pick at the betta's ample fins causing injury. Betta's will eat baby guppies (guppy fry) so don't add the betta to a guppy tank if your trying to breed.

The male betta is pretty, more colors the female is ugly. They will attack goldfish....heck they will attack each other. I had a male put him in with the female and he killed her. I didn't leave them for long either.
