My Answer: The earth could run out of food (derived from living things) if there is a catastrophic disruption at some critical point in the natural food web which begins with microscopic organisms like bacteria and algae that propagates up the chain/web from lower to higher life forms.

Remember Charlton Heston in the movie Soylent Green. In the movie factory cannibalism based on the recycling of human bodies in the form of fake foods was a temporary solution to the lack of real foods due to unchecked pollution of the oceans that killed off all the plankton at the bottom of the food web.

Arable land is decreasing every day by the amount of asphalt, or cement coverage. The birth rate of India will exceed the population of China soon and only so much food can be produced, and with the variables caused by unexpected weather such as typhoons, hurricanes, droughts. The seas are being made unfit for marine life and rivers are also in danger. Acid rain decreases crop yield....Not if we run out of food but when we run out of food.

We could get hit by a comet or have a nuclear war which would GREATLY impair food production with nuclear winter and the devestation. Of course there would probably also be a lot less people around to feed.
