I am a New Yorker, born and raised in 'the city', and very proud and arrogant about it!

Frankly, people coming to visit the city - most of you stand out as tourists. Your dressed differently, and have an air about you that you are not in a rush or not stressed - you are on vacation witnessing the city as a museum and the dwellers as part of the exhibit. Not that I mind that really, you just allow yourselves to stand out.

Allow me to illustrate the point. On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, a late night comedy/talk show that does clips where they take a camera out into the city's streets to do funny things. One time they were trying to find 'real New Yorkers'. They walked, I think it was, around 6th Avenue and 34th Street (Herald Square), and began searching for these 'real New Yorkers'. The test began. Jay Leno said 'hi' to a group of people walking by. They said hello back, and there was a buzz sound and the screen froze with the word 'TOURISTS' on it. The same thing repeated several times.

Occasionally when I am walking in the street, someone, usually a tourist or a mental patient of some sort, will say 'hi' to me. I give them a real weird look, like they just did something very strange. Sometimes I will nod back, or give a low monotone 'hey' back and walk faster.

If you can, try to avoid being a tourist! You may get attitude from the natives. Quiet is good. As far as you being interesting? Well, I am certainly interesting (trust me), but I do not expect strangers in the city to see me that way, beyond just the way I may look to them. People won't pay you any mind really, unless you do something or act in a certain way that draws attention. It's a BIG city.

I didn't think New Yorkers were particularly talkative. Are you sure you haven't been watching too much tv?

Actually, people from CA seem to have that same "we're the best" attitude. Foreigners always want to go there, too! Especially Hollywood... the world knows about Hollywood. On the whole, though, New Yorkers seem a little more "with-it." Maybe its the warm pacific air, but Californians always seem a little spacey.

I have met several New Yorkers and have found them to all be descent people with their feet on the ground and their heads well below the cloud layer. Aside from differences in political policy preferences I seem to have a great deal in common with them. Now the City itself makes me very uncomfortable, I wasn't there long enough to become familiar with my surroundings and felt much more comfortable when I had my friend (a native of the City) at my side. He kept me out of dangerous situations and trouble in general.

Now if you want to talk Boston or Paris, that's another story.

As a New Yorker, we are so used to tourists. Ugh, I don't get how come tourists are in love with our dirty city. In the heart of our city, you can spot a tourist a mile away. Staring up at the tall buildings, or lost struggling to find your way to Times Square. I am very helpful, and at other times I am very intrigued by the way you people on the WEST SIIIIDE dress, talk etc. Its cute though I find you guys VERY interesting!

We are the best and one of the reasons for that is that everyone comes here. Even without tourists NY is so diverse - we can relate to people from all over.

most new yorkers I have met are very arrogant, with an annoying accent, I went there in 04, was very surprised to see how many buildings and apartments there are, way too crowded and sad to say it was not the cleanest place either, I was born and raised in los Angeles and I can live without a new yorker

hey friend not all New Yorkers are like that. I'm a New yorker and I had enough of it I'm trying to fit in down south. I stuck out more in New York than I do down here. Alot of real New Yorkers don't care where your from because it's who you are. Be yourself.

I lived in NY for most of my life and now I'm in CA. Yes, NY is better than CA. It's just my opinion and anyways, Californians talk really loudly in public and especially on their cell phones.
