You are a little confused.

FIRST an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) is Soviet made. The US version of that weapon is the M203 Grenade Launcher and is mounted underneath the barrel. During the Vietnam era the M79 was used. It was a separate weapon that fired grenades. Since then though the 20mm grenade is only fired out of weapons like the M203 or more recently the Automatic Grenade Launcher.

The RPG fires a stronger weapon than the 20mm grenade. It is meant to be an anti-armor weapon, and it could penetrate the tanks of the Vietnam Era, but it cannot penetrate modern tanks. That’s why the US and its allies use small missile launchers against tanks. The US LAW (Light Antitank Weapon) is a small missile comparable to the RPG. It could really mess up an APC, but it would bounce if it hit a modern tank. For that you need a stronger missile, The Dragon and the TOW missiles have been replaced by the Javelin, which can defeat modern armor.

SECOND the rockets hitting Israel are Katyusha rockets. Katyusha Rockets compare to RPGs like a police car compares to a modern tank. The Katyusha Rockets were supplied by Iran and are Russian made weapons. Iran had US weapons, but after the fall of the Shaw of Iran and the rise of the Moslem Extremists the US stopped supplying weapons to Iran. The Shaw was a brutal dictator, like Sadam in Iraq, and for the same reasons. During the Cold War the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and were supporting Iraq, Egypt, and Syria. The US needed allies in the region; Iran and Israel were the US’s primary allies. When The Shaw fled Iran and the Religious Dictators took over they blamed the US for supporting the Shaw and started a campaign against the US. They invaded the US embassy and kidnapped the people inside. This is an act that violates the rules for dealing with other nations. A nation’s embassy is considered to be native soil for that nation. So Iran in effect invaded America. Iran created Hezbollah in 1982 for the sole purpose of “driving Israel into the sea.” Currently Syria and Iran are fighting a proxy war using Hezbollah against Israel. Both nations have tried to attack or threaten Israel directly and got their rear ends handed to them; so they fight through someone else. The last time Israel fought with Lebanon it was to stop Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel. The UN tried to limit the war so they sent in peacekeepers lead by the US Marines. Hezbollah didn’t want to stop their war so they drove a truck bomb into the Marine barracks killing most of them.

After the fall of the Soviet Union Russia was in need of cash. So they sold a lot of arms to anyone. Iran couldn’t get US weapons so they bought Russian ones. Like the RPGs the AK-47s, and the Katyusha Rockets.

The difference between a missile and a rocket is in its guidance system. The rocket has no guidance system while the missile has one. Javelins and TOWs are missiles, they have a guidance system, but the RPG and the Katyusha Rockets don’t have any guidance system. Katyusha Rockets are just terrorist weapons. They make poor weapons of war, because it is difficult to target a specific target. If the Soviet Military and the US Military wanted to destroy a house on a hill their doctrines of war vary. The US, and its NATO allies, will use one or two weapons and direct the attack on the house. The Soviets would use a mass of weapons and destroy everything on top of the hill. In a major war, like WWII, this is a good doctrine. It also makes the weapons cheaper since a guidance system is the most expensive part of the weapon. So Katyusha Rockets are meant to be used in massive barrage attacks.

When Hezbollah fires a Katyusha Rocket they don’t care where it lands, they don’t even try to aim it. They are a terrorist organization and would prefer if the rocket landed on a civilian target, instead of a military target. Since the weapons are unguided EVERYONE has to take cover during an attack, this increases the terror. The Katyusha Rockets fired by Hezbollah hit primarily civilian targets, not military ones. They also sometimes land in the middle of nowhere, which is fine for Hezbollah since they usually cause wild fires. Who wants to fight a fire when a rocket can land on your head any minute? They fire the rockets and then run and hide. That’s why the civilized nations consider terrorists to be cowards. They can’t win a conventional war so they hide near schools, and Mosques, the hide among the population and when the military comes they disappear like water through your hand.

Civilized nations handle conflicts with diplomacy. Warfare is considered the last option, still there are laws to war; the Geneva Convention. Terrorists ignore diplomacy and the rules of war, they avoid military targets, which might fight back and target civilians. In the Hijackings of 911 the terrorists could have aimed at a fort or military base, but it they did they might get shot down. So instead they attacked the World Trade Center, they attacked the Pentagon, which had no air defense, and they tried to attack the Capitol for the same reason.

RPG's are rocket propelled grenades. They are shoulder fired and you have to see your target and must be relatively close.

The rockets that Hezbollah are using are larger and can be fired from quite a distance (hence the area that Israel is trying to clear out in Southern Lebanon). They are like small versions of missiles. You ask a good question though. Why do they have so many. I think many are surprised at their stockpile.

RPG's are common military item of all countries. German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and numerous others including the states. Because of the close ties with Isreal and the US, you are gonna see a lot more of a "oh how horrible hezzbolah is being to Isreal and every soldier that is being killed by them" and you will sheltered from the atrocities that Isreal is performing in Lebanon. children and families destroyed by Isreal, thousands of peopel killed, most of wich are no Hezbollah supportors or part of that group and nothing is said of that, but you will hear about the 9 sodiers that were killed or wounded. Poor Isreal.

I do like Kevin Sites, most of his editorials are very moving and well presented

Kevin Site will say anything to stay on the air. Russia has been selling small arms for over 20 years. Some of the folks around this country need to spend a few years in uniform.

BTW, if terrorists have one American made weapon, you can bet your life you will see the photo over and over for at least two weeks.

RPG is the Russian acronym for Ruchnoy Protivotankovy Granatomyot and is translated into English as 'handheld antitank grenade-launcher'. They are a mostly old soviet bloc weapon. They are cheap. I read once that they where about 50 cents a piece. It is one of those weapons that just about anyone can get they hands on. If you remember back to the story of Black Hawk Down it was RPGs that took the helos down. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find RPGs to buy on the Internet.

An rpg is simply an explosive which is rocket propelled. it is quite simple to make. You can make one yourself fairly easily.

RPG's can and are made by most countries. Russia and China make the majority of the rpg's found in the world. In fact, the most common type you see in clips on the news is the Soviet RPG-7.

RPG stands for Rocket Propelled Grenade. This technology is available right here on the internet. I urge you to make some in your garage and use them when necessary.

They are Katushya rockets... think about the name a little bit. Since Russia's collapse in the 80's, they have been selling off their huge stockpiles of weapons to WHOEVER will buy them to make a little extra cash... Sure America has funded certain revolutionaries in foreign countries to further our own political agendas, but at least we discriminate who we supply our arms to.

The RPGs currently used are Soviet/Russian made. Iran has the capability to produce missiles as well.
