It depends on you. If you want a pet that constantly want to play with you and can never seem to live without you, then get a dog (they will always want to play and it can get tiring and stressful to own them).
If you want a pet that you can play with and still have some alone time, then get a cat (they like to play, but would rather keep to themselves most of the time).
If you want a pet without the hassle of having to care for it most of the time other than feed it and occasional check-ups, then get fish (all you have to do is feed them and change the aquarium's filter everytime it stops working. You don't have to take it out for walks or play with it)
These are just the 3 most common pets. You can try exploring other animals to see which one fits your lifestyle and personality more.

definitly a dog. But not just any dog. a lot of it depends on the breed. You can find any dog to go with your personality. if you are more layed back, yuo could get a bloohhound. If you are very energetic I would recoment a dalmation or retreiver. if you are into swimming and would like a buddy to swim with, black and chocolate labs like that. if you are rich and want a dog to go with your stuck up attitude, try a poodle. Of you just want a conpanian to play around with and cuddle with, dashhounds are good. If you love colder weather and the snow, def a husky.
you cant come up with any other pet to match your lifestyle and personality. All breeds of cats are similar, fish are.. well... bored, and rodents smell...
=)

I think that a Poodle is the best bet. Toy poodles are the right size, not to big, not too small. A toy poodle weighs between 7-10 pounds fully grown. They do not shed(non alergenic), like to play(great for kids) yet are not needful of a lot of play time outside like bigger dogs are.
I keep my poodle trimmed in what is called a "puppy cut" so there is no poufy, frou-frou poms on him. He is a boy dog after all! I would not trade my dog for anything.

That depends more on you than the pet. What can you afford? What can you take care of? How much time can you invest in keeping it happy and healthy?

Ragdoll Cat. It's a cat, acts like a dog. No shedding.

Once you litter box train...kittys are pretty easy, not noisy and a lot of fun. I love fish too, but their supplies can run into hundreds of dollars.
