So, my son is entering "full-time" kindergarden (which we have to pay for, because only part-time kindergarden is free in Indiana), and they consider 8am to 2:30, full time! Then I realized that all throughout my schooling (as i am a latch-key kid) i got home before MY parents! why is that? Can't there be a better way?

I completely understand why you would think that this is a strange way to call 8 - 2:30 full time. Kids at such a young age get tired in general, especially when they are learning new things. I mean, imagine how tired you get when you're at work 8 - 5. Kids can't handle that, even with a recess, lunch, and nap break.
If there was to be a solution, it would be to have "extended preschool" for those kids whose parents work until 5. In this time they can include a snack time, plus nap time, and even extra activites made for advanced kids. The only downside is that you get a tired kid at the end of the day (not always a bad thing).

here in Maryland kindergarden is full time and from 8:50 am-3:45pm....my son was in kindergarden(the only thing that is 1/2 day is pre-k) last year and was exhausted by the time he got home...when i was a kid kindergarden was either in the morning or afternoon it wasn't such a long day...its too much on the kids. kids do get home before their parents, but the ones who are too young are either at a babysitters (now its called day care) or their parents are home. Thats just the way it is when parents have to work. You can't send kids to school at nighttime.

Check to see if your school or a place nearby has an after-school program that will watch your kid along with other kids in the school until you can go pick him up. Or you could ask the parents of one of his friends that you know will be home when school lets out to pick up your son and let him stay with them and your friend until you finish.
Or do what my situation was one year. Have a relative or a neighbor near you that will be home pick up your son and stay with him until you get out of work.

thats the tough reality of life the female has to work. this never was a problem when it was unthinkable for the female to work but this day and age both working is still not enough for most. If you want better hours you have to pay, get them home schooled or private school also see if they have a big brother big sister program after school that will watch them. That is what my school system has.

wow you have to pay for you kid to go to school in indiana???? or is it a private school he's going to? my son is going into kindergarten and all the schools here (in oklahoma) are free unless it's a private one. as for the question...i don't know. that's a good one though. i guess they just assume that there will be someone to take care of the child after school hours like a babysitter, daycare, or sibling or someone along those lines. i always got home before my dad, but my mom worked nights as a bartender when i was in school so she was always home or there to get us. very good question though.

with me it was and still is the same thing..i get home before my parents. my school gets out at 2;45..and my parents get home at 7. when i was little it was problem, but now it isnt that big of a deal. i think it is kind of strange, but i dont think the school can be open for that long. as your son gets older i think it will probably become easier to deal with. try getting your son a babysitter, or maybe some after school program he could go to. good luck

Because the school system is not a babysitter and kids shouldn't have to put in such long days working at schoolwork as their parents do at jobs.

Do you expect everyone's school to fitted around your work schedule? They have nothing to do with each other. You need to find a place for your kids to go after school. It's not the school's job to watch your kids all day.

It's called "don't have children until you are able to stay at home and take care of them YOURSELF". There is no reason on this earth why anyone should get pregnant, drop there child off in day care or school and expect them to be raised by strangers. If you can't afford to stay home with your child, DON'T have one! Your child deserves better.
