I mean if you're actually smart, then you will have no need to announce it to the world. People around you will recognize you for your intelligence. And even if they don't, you will be smart enough to be secure in yourself rather than to go out there looking for validation from the world?

I agree. I just feel sorry for them too. I just wish they can find happiness within them.

I agree! I think people that mention how smart they are the time has trouble with self-esteem about their intelligence.

Also, the type of people who try to make you feel stupid--those are the other sufferers. If they are really smart it will either be self-evident and they wouldn't need my confirmation. And they certainly don't need to use other people to look bad to prove their cleverness. I have always thought this.

While I think that you do have a point about people who brag about being smart (shouldn't it be self-apparent?), the term "Self esteem issues" is psychobabble. People tend to believe that self esteem is a really important prerequisite to success in the world and to mental health, and to believe that we have a terrible shortage of self esteem.

But it only takes a little stroll through the questions and answers here to see that in fact we've got way too MUCH self esteem going on - a lot of people who think they're a lot better (smarter, more moral, more patriotic, etc.) than they really are.

yes,i think they're very insecure.i've seen some on this site.i have a suspicion that the people with close to 50% best answers have a problem because they're obsessed with being the "best" and probably get sad when someone gives them a thumbs down rating*sob* hahah

know-it-alls, can't stand them, yes they have self esteem issues.

Acting smart, they think people will recognize it and assume that they are and thus it boosts their self esteem.
