Currently.....LaDanian Tomlinson....he can do whatever you ask him to do, I wouldn't be suprised he he could play defense as well.
Not many players can compare to him right now...Marshall Faulk is on a down swing...but he was a great asset in his prime.

Marshall Faulk
Slippery smooth coming out of the backfield, elusive, awesome top end speed, cutback abilities and best running back for catching passes out of the backfield.
Helped turned the Rams around from a losing team to a Super Bowl winner in one season. Got NFL MVP award and single handedly put the Rams on his shoulder and willed them into the playoffs in 2000-2001.

Including quarterbacks, I would certainly go with Brett Favre for his durability, toughness, leadership, strong arm, respectability (off field), among several other factors.
However, non-QBs, I would go with Jerry Rice. He's an icon in his own league. Again, he has proven leadership abilities, respected on and off the field, he was consistent, tought, and probably the best reciever of all time

The best ever would have to be :
Offense - Jim Brown
Defense - Dick Butkus
The best now are :
Offense - LaDanian
Defense - Troy Palamalu (and I hate the Steelers)
