I start shopping for the next Christmas the day after Christmas. Everything goes on sale and so I get things all year long and hide them away from little eyes.

I actually shop year round. I put names on my calendar and those are the people I shop for that month. I leave the kids to last since there's always something they just have to have or they'll grow so much that clothes won't fit. By doing my shopping this way, I don't have to freak over last minute decisions or going broke in December!

Usually I start in the summer. I am anal about being organized, so I create a database with all of my family members information in it (sizes for everything--clothes, shoes, jewelery, favorite colors, themes of rooms, etc.) and take a print out of it with me as I go shopping and supply everyone with a copy too. I also create a spreadsheet to track my spending and budget and attach an overview of my budget and checklist (along with gift ideas) to the outside of a manila envelope in which I place all of the receipts as I go. This way, if someone doesn't like something, I have all the receipts in one place. Plus, it's handy when it comes time to balance the checkbook. It's pathetic, I know, but it works for me.
