I didn't have sharp pain, but more pressure vaginally for sure. Also, I found that I could breathe much easier. If you have a midwife, she should be able to show you how to tell when the baby has dropped (never known a physician who taught moms this, though). She should also be able to tell you what position the baby is in.

Just pressure and physical apperance. With my daughter, it felt like she was going to 'fall out', but she was my third child and small.

when mine dropped I could breathe a little easier and my stomach had more room
but also i had a lot of pain in my lower abdomen and cervix, the baby is just putting a lot of pressure on the muscles
call your ob/gyn to make sure though

the sharp pain you describe is when the head is pressure caused by the head beginning to engage.... i found standing for too long towards the end of pregnancy would cause discomfort.
