Great question! It makes ya think. Though we like to think of America as the "Home of the free", its not. I think there is more evidence that Santa Claus exists. However, the thought of everyone designating where their tax payments go would really bring about some radical changes. For one, the "rich" do not pay the same amount of taxes (per total earnings) as the middle class, or poor. If this occurred, totally different issues would take the forefront. Basically, paying your taxes would give you power instead of stress. Imagine totally designating your taxes to education, aids research, or a run down park in your community? Imagine the feelings of ownership, pride, and happiness the average citizen would feel. We would all feel like we could actually make a difference. Wow, it would be like living in a democracy.

We are not in a democracy. We are in a representative democracy. Your representatives get to vote and congress and state legislatures decide how to allocate their revenues. Remedy: elect different representatives (nice in theory, doesn't work in practice).
Interesting Note: Did you know that you CAN allocate when you donate to various charities. It doesn't work anyway. For example, I can ear-mark my United Way funds to the Boy Scouts of America. The United Way decides that, as a whole, the Boy Scouts should get (for example) $500. If I earmarked $100, they would designate only $400 from general donations.
Do you think Congress would not do the same thing. It is truly hopeless.

Because we are not a democracy, we are a representative republic. We vote for people to govern us - we do not govern ourselves. If you want money allocated differently, try to set up your own party and get them elected. Until that time, we are stuck with the slime bags we have in office now. (and the good Senator from Conn will be gone soon - don't let the door hit you on the *** on the way out!)

I agree with you. I don't like the ways those jerks spend my money either. However, there is a system(?) of "Checks-and- Balances" in place. We write the checks, and they spend the balances on whatever they want.
Those mostly corrupt, incompetent windbags that we elect to Congress, along with the President, come up with these God-Awful ways of spending our money. During election years, especially, they promise us new programs that sound good to a lot of people, but don't work worth a damn. When they get elected, they pass laws creating those programs, which makes the government even bigger every year.
There is a tremendous amount of backroom politics, and "deals" made all the time ("You vote for my bill and I'll vote for your's")

I agree totally. If we lived in a true democracy we would have a say in how our money is being used by politicans who seem to forget they are servants of the people. Neither I nor anyone I know wants their taxes to be used by this government to fund yet more wars and bombs to murder and maim innocent children.
