I noticed that after I've been driving on the freeway a while when I slow down or stop I see smoke coming from under the hood. Also while driving my car will atomaticly act like its in neutral while still in drive. And sometimes when I go to take off it will jerk and then go. I had an oil change done in februrary and the car sat until july. Whats wrong and what do I need to do. Any help I can get will help alot. I would rather go to autozone or advance and get parts than go to a mechanic. please go into detail what I should do. Thanx to all who answer

Given the age, I'd look at replacing the Modulator valve on the transmission. It can leake causing excess smoke, but you'd also lose some atf from the trans too.
Smoke after highway runs in the engine compartment could be leaking Valve cover gaskets.
Those are my thoughts.

If there is smoke under the hood while running or stopped, It is usually (99.9%) a coolant leak. Check hoses around radiator and on top of engine after filling it back up with coolant (if the engine is hot, make sure to keep the engine running while adding coolant....water will do until you find the leak). Note all leaks and look into replacing proper hoses accordingly.
Next, if the car acts like its in neutral while actually in gear, your car may have a transmission problem; but considering it's an older car, you may just need to be patient with how slow the car performs it's actions. The pressure in the transmission isn't as good as new so you have to wait until you feel it engage before hitting the gas. Failure to do so, and wrenching the drive train can result in complete destruction of transmission. Also check fluid in transmission (assuming it's an automatic, hopefully). Proper pressure is essential. Both too much or too little can be dangerous to your car. Hopefully this will help you. Any more questions, email me at pjordan1182@yahoo.com

smoking is probably leaking oil somewhere either bottom of engine or valve cover gaskets may check to see if transmission is low of fluid that could cause it acting that way --also i would get a fuel injector cleaner and a gas treatment where it has been sitting so long >>complete fuel system cleaner<< is best whatever on the gas treatment <

You have a transmission oil leak, fix the leak or just keep adding oil. Always check transmission oil with the car running and in park.
