I mean come on, why the hell did they let Gruden go anyway? I think he was the best Coach they've had since Madden!
Don't get me wrong, Shell was a hell of a player! But until Davis cuts the puppet strings and lets the Coach do his job, they will never be winners again!
Case in point...... SuperBowl/ Raiders vs. Tampa Bay! What an embarressment for Davis and the entire Raider Organization!
And yes, I am a Loyal Raiders Fan and have been for 34 years!
I think they should stop spending money on has been talent and get a hard nose top quality coach and let him kick their asses into shape!
They Raiders used to make other teams tremble with fear...... now they just get laughed at and most if not all the teams (and their fans) have NO RESPECT for them!!! What do ya think?

I couldn't agree more. Absolutely with everything you said. They should've hung on to Gruden, lost the has been and old allstars and put money and training into an excellent rookie qb and line and pay them to stay and play together for a long time. Davis needs to sell to Steinbrenner!!!! What do you think? Now there's a man who knows where to put his money and look what he got for it! People say he bought it, HE DID!!! The other teams had the chance and still have the chance to put money into the best players and try to squeek by with a low payroll. That's b.s. I love the Raiders and have been a fan since 70's. You're right, other teams were scared shytless of them and now the Raider's fans are a bigger threat than the f**king team!!!! Davis is a dumbshyt. Right on brother, right on.

Shell compiled a record of 56 wins, 41 losses, and was named AFC Coach of the Year in 1990, when the Raiders won the AFC West division with a 12-4 record, and advanced to the AFC championship game in the playoffs. Al Davis, owner of the Raiders, fired Shell after a 9-7 season in 1994, a move Davis said he later regretted

shell's win % .577, grudens win % at Oakland .588, not a big difference, and I'm sorry but Oakland wouldn't have beat Tampa even if they had gruden that year. Also, Despite the impressive Super Bowl win, there were many people--including players on the Buccaneers like Warren Sapp and a number of sports analysts--who attributed Gruden's win primarily to the smothering defense that coach Tony Dungy had created during his tenure with the Bucs, ignoring the major revamping that Gruden did on the offensive side of the ball. Nevertheless, Gruden publicly and graciously thanked Dungy for his contributions upon accepting the Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl XXXVII post game ceremony.

In the two years following Gruden's Super Bowl win, the Bucs went 7-9 and 5-11 respectively, confirming to many Dungy supporters that Gruden simply took over an emerging and strong team from Dungy and then drove it into the ground with the acquisition of aging veterans who could no longer perform.

Davis let Gruden go with 1 year left on his contract, that way anybody who wanted Gruden then would have too pay for him. If Davis waited another year Gruden would have left anyway and Davis would have got nothing for him. The answer to the Art Shell question can't be known yet. But being an unwavering Raider fan for 37yrs. I want to believe they will improve a great deal. It is going to be a major job not only for the team, but also for the rusty coaching staff.

I think that Davis was the owner of the team when they were winning SB's I seriously doubt there problems can be attributed to him. All teams have hard times it is the way the NFL works. I agree Gruden was the better coach and I think he settled for Shell but I really don't put that much importance on who coach's so long as the coach is competant and the players a good..Its a slow process building a contender and it will take players to get it done.

Gruden wanted out. Go figure....he smelled it coming. But give Art a chance. He did have a winning record a the raiders coach( which can not be said for Callahan or Turner) and did it with less talent than he will have now.Think about it Kaufman or Jordan.

You got the name wrong in your question.

Davis is desperate since he screwed up and let Shell go the first time. He has even said publicly that he regretting firing Shell when he did.

And you're absolutely right about the Raiders getting no respect - no one else wanted to coach there. Remember when Sean Payton backed out of that job 2 years ago?

I think Gruden wanted his ways but couldn't filter out what Davis was telling him. Shell is different, he will go about his ways of football while filtering out what Davis tells him. Kinda like YES SIR kinda man but will get things done his own way. I hope he doesn't get frustrated. But I think by re-hiring Shell, Davis is saying that it's his time to just watch from the Owner's Box.

you are exactly right. Davis blew it big time with Gruden. Now he has resorted to a former head coach and an offensive coordinator who has been out of the league for years./
