Hockey_Freak ; I am in Montréal, the institute of hockey, we are a 24 times Stanley Cup champs the biggest championships won in profesionnal sports in history! So trust me when I say that Carolina doesn't deserve an NHL team... but Hartford does! Screw the owners!

1- well i would keep all Canadian teams for sure.
2- i would keep teams like Detroit, NY Rangers, Boston, Chicago those are 4 American teams from the original six.
3- i would keep Philadelphia, NY Islanders, Minnesota, St. Louis, Washington, Buffalo, and yes i would keep Los Angeles Kings just because they are one of the next 6 to join the league back in the 67 expansion, and Pittsburgh also but they will need to move cause it doesn't have the money coming in, heck they've been bankrupt 2 times the past 10 years.
4- i would get rid of teams like Anaheim, San Jose, Tampa Bay, Florida, Phoenix, Columbus, Dallas, Carolina, Nashville and if you look Atlanta they had a team and they fell apart and moved to Calgary, and Colorado was lucky to get a team like the Quebec Nordiques cause that team was getting better but didn't have a big enough arena.

you could go down to Tampa and 70% would not no who the Lightning are, even the past Stanley Cup you could go buy a playoff ticket the same day as the game in Carolina. it needs to go back down to 24 maybe even 21 teams like the 80's and then we wouldn't have to change so many rules for most American to understand the game and we will have more top players per team then just 2 or 3 players that are superstars.

bring back Winnipeg Jets and the Quebec Nordiques.

and for TRE' ALLEN the Montreal Canadiens have won 10 Stanley Cups since 1967 expansion. and the last one in 1993, and since the 67 expension Canadian teams have won 16 Stanley Cups from 1967 to the last one in 1993.

This question is interesting because I see most of the answers are from northern people as they tend to trash all the southern teams. 1 guy even said he didn't even follow hockey in California and seemed to imply not at all so I wonder why he is in the hockey section. Yes it is a shame that Canada has lost team and can't seem to compete with salaries etc but the new rules should help.

The reason there are so many teams so far away from Canada is that all the old snow birds moved south for the winter or retirement. It's economics. I don't think any teams should go away, some should move to where they will be more economically stable and can compete for good players.

Yes I am from the southern region (southwest) Phoenix to be exact and we are the home of the former Winnipeg Jets. I am so glad we have a team here and it has really impacted the valley in a positive way. We have high schools that now have hockey teams and we have gained many ice and roller rinks. I even finally learned to skate so I could play the game.

Anybody who trashes this game simply just doesn't understand it and should shut up unless they take the time to learn about it and see just why this game is so much better than all the other major sports. I say this as an avid watcher of all sports and I DO understand the rules to HOCKEY, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL and BASEBALL.

I hope Canada can get a couple more teams, you guys are very passionate about the game and it showed in the last Stanley Cup finals. It's all about money.

League retraction was discussed during the lockout. The cities that were brought up most often were Columbus and Atlanta.

The jealously on this Internet forum is so apparent. There's no other reason that so many people named Carolina. The Hurricanes have a great management group, a very solid fan base, and have represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals twice in the past four seasons.

As for Montreal and their 24 Stanley Cup championships, how many of those victories occurred when there were only 6 teams in the league? An amazing feat indeed!

Well since 1 of those teams won the Stanly cup this year, and another went really far in the playoffs, it doesn't make sense to not have them in the NHL! If the team is successful and the players are happy the hype over hockey will grow in those not-so hockey cities!! Right now they may not have the biggest fan base but it takes time for something new to catch on!! If they can maintain the ice rink in a city they are worthy of a hockey team!!!

I agree with Columbus and Anaheim. Wasahington is a good rival for the Penguins. Also the Penguins don't need to move as the CBA helps small market teams. They went bankrupt ONCE in the last ten years. That was because the horriable lease they had, in part to get quick money to compete in the early 90s. The Judge even said it was the worst lease he had ever seen and threw it out.

Oh to those who want the Pens to move you do realize the move would be to Kansas City? That has already all but been guarnteed by the man who could be new owner. Yeah he has signed the letter of intent to purchase. He has also said he won't move them if they get a new arena, which the idiot seemed to forget was a term of sale. I won't get into that.

I agree with you 100% Columbus, Anaheim, Carolina, Washington don't deserve to have a hockey team if they don't support them. NHL should be trimmed down to a few team so the level of competition is better.
Love the HABS. Hope they add one more cup this year. Best team ever.

I believe that most of the sun-belt hockey teams should not be in the NHL. I am a firm believer of this one crucial issue: If you cannot play hockey outside in winter, how it was originally played, then you just might not deserve a hockey team. I give a few exceptions; Carolina, because their fans and the team proved that Carolina does have a hockey audience and a great hockey team, San jose, who also showed great pride in their team by showing up and supporting the boys. I also include Dallas, because, as much as I absolutely hate them, they make a great rivalry for the Oilers. Other than that, there aren't a lot of sun-belt cities who should have a team. If you have a supportive fan base, then you should have a team, if not, you're basically wasting your time.

Get rid of Columbus,Anaheim,Atlanta,
Carolina,Nashville,Florida,T-Bay.....
These teams should not exist!
The people in those cities just do not care about hockey!
Which is fine....it is time the NHL realizes this!
Being from Winnipeg,I would love to see a team in Winnipeg, but I just don't believe there would be enough people here who would pay for season tickets as I would!
I think the NHL should just shut those teams down and go with less teams.........you would have more talent competing for less jobs, which means those players would have to play even harder!

Who cares. How many people think that the NHL should not be a sport? I am from Southern California and tend to follow all the local teams (Lakers, Angels, Rams (even though they moved to St Louis) and Bruins. I consider the Clippers, Dodgers, Raiders, 49ers and USC as local rivals. Not once do I ever pay attention to Hockey. The LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks don't even exist in our household.

If many citizens of a city still do NOT realize that they won the Stanley Cup, that city should NOT have an NHL team. I think that would eliminate Tampa Bay and Raleigh from the NHL.

I think Victoria, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan (build the arena halfway between Regina and Saskatoon), Quebec City, Windsor, and Halifax should all have NHL teams.
