It is motion sickness

Because riding in a car requires active participation. Our bodies are constantly shifting weight and adjusting for the turns, starts, and stops of the car's movement.

When you read, your brain is also trying to move your eyes VERY accurately to keep registered with the page.

When you do both, that's a LOT of activity. Your eyes and body are sending two different sets of signals to your brain, and that produces a headache or nausea in some people.

Many people find they can't read in the city, but have no problem on a straight highway with few turns and no stops.

People usually feel ill when reading in a car because the mind gets confused by the fact that the body is moving (due to the car) without physically having to move. Also the minor motions the body experiences makes it difficult to focus on the text as you would if you were simply seated.

Doesn't give me a headache, but does make me nauseous. Motion sickness having to do with the middle ear's trying to balance the motion of the car with the print on the page.

You need to focus to read, but you are in a car, you won't be able to focus that much because you will be wiggling with the movement of the car. Those who try their best to focus their eyes on what they were reading will get a headache or get dizzy because they are forcing themselves to do something hard to do.

I don't know about headaches. It makes my husband car sick to even read a map when the car is moving.

Because your vehicle is moving, and as it does things along the way seem to move also, causing dizziness when you look around and —as a consequence— headaches (you cannot pay attention to both, the moving things and your reading)........

the pressure of the movement and the bouncing up and down in the car your eyes have to work hard to stay focused and strains them giving you a headache

It doesn't give me one (that I'm aware of), but most of the time it's because the person reading is getting jarred in the car along with the book.

well, for me it is because I am trying to focus on something that is moving... hence, motion sickness. I get dizzy and get a really bad headache.
