I agree with pato. Modern multiculturalism says all cultures are equally valid in the public sphere so you end up with a coompletemismash of cultures and no real shared values. The old American way where all immigrants were taught tobe American and to aspire to become American worked because there was clarity about what ah American was. Omdividual cultures were preserved by giving different groups the freedom to [ractice their culture in private. We shou;d a;; go back to this.

Multiculturalism is a feel good response to ethnic diversity. While I'm all for ethnic diversity in our society, I believe the many different viewpoints has made America a wonderful country by keeping the government in check, multiculturalism has superseded individual rights for group rights. This is contrary to the American idea of personal freedom and responsibility. It also jeopardizes national identity with dual citizenship and multiple languages. Wasn't there a time when being American was the goal of immigrants? It seems that is no longer the goal, but a means to group rights. What I'm saying is that while I appreciate and encourage diversity, being American should be more important than belonging to an ethnic group IN America.

A multi-cultural society is a contradiction in terms. By definition, a society is bound together by a single, unifying culture. Multi-culturalism implies a plurality of societies and is divisive within a single nation.

Sometimes. It depends on the spread of cultures within the group. If one is dominate then you may have a problem.

We manage differences from the Birmingham to the Scottish accent, we manage Welsh and Gaelic and English, we manage foods such as tripe and haggis and jellied eels.
