I have a theory, let's see if I can enlighten anyone else. The reason (or one reason why) the Bush Administration refuses a cease-fire, despite most of the rest of the world's pleas for it, is so the media and the world will take their eyes off Iraq (and other U.S. problems) and focus on the Israeli/Lebanonese conflict. Have you watched CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC lately- they have almost completely forgot about Iraq-95% of broadcasts these days focus on Israel and Lebanon. Realizing the mess of 100 civilians dying each day, troops being redeployed to Baghdad, and mounting attacks and a possible threat of civil war, the Bush Administration does not want this damaging news to haunt them day in and out leading to November voting. So let everyone focus on Israel/Lebanon and forget that we are in costly wars somewhere else, Iraq and Afghanistan, so they won't suffer in the November elections. It appears as though Karl Rove is back at work, God knows Dubya doesn't have the brains to think this up.

Bush needed to get the focus off Iraq and onto something else. At the cost of many Lebanese children Bush has allowed Israel it's spot in the headlines.
American soldiers die everyday in Iraq but it''s more important to hear how many Israeli soldiers died.
Just watch the news and you will see that America over time has become a pawn to Israel.
I don't want to see their news but would rather see American news.
Gas prices are never even mentioned anymore although they are the highest they've ever been.
What's important to Americans, American business or somebody elses?

They're certainly capitalizing on such a fortuitous distraction, but I don't know if you can be certain they engineered the whole thing. Israel has a history of doing this, after all. It's a new wrinkle, right now, but it will also be old news pretty soon. If Israel turns up the heat, and decides to conquer Lebanon entirely, while Bush continues to refuse to call for a halt, then you can probably be pretty sure the whole thing was planned.

The Democrats will surely make an effort to divert attention back to Iraq before the elections, and Bush's refusal to lean on Israel may well come back and bite him in the butt. If not, I know what kinds of questions I'll be posting around that time...

For someone who thinks the adminstration doesn't have any brains, you sure think they can put together a grand conspiracy.

The problem is that you're taking today (and only today's) headlines and assuming that the govt is trying to manipulate it for political gain.

What does Bush have to gain by having TODAY's headlines talk about Israel, when he should have manipulated the situation so that the media talks about Israel in late October.

Despite what the press thinks, poll numbers do NOT count, until you get within a week or two of the election.

I doubt the US is doing this on purpose. I however do agree that this works to the USA's advantage. No one is paying attention to Iraq and no one has paid attention to Afghanistan for years now. This conflict between Israel and Lebanon will probably end soon and we can get back to Iraq and all that other fun stuff.
