I've never tried this before but I think it may be worth a try. Cover the paint you want to remove with Break fluid using a paint brush. Read the bottle to make sure you understand the health risks. Let it soak for about a week then Try scrub it off with a hose pipe and a hard brush. If it can take the paint off a car I guess it should be able to remove some paint off your brick wall. If you try it I would love to know if it works or not. Paint stripper may work too just don't let your 8 y/o do it or he will burn himself.
Good Luck.

Sand blaster is best, but if you want you can try those things you attach to the end of a power drill (it has thin metal rods that extend when the drill is on and will take the paint down). Just don't damage the brick.

If the paint is still fresh, a power washer should remove all traces from brick.

Brick acid cleaner and a pressure hose. You should be able to get at it most DIY stores.

May as well do all the bricks at the same time so they all look nice and clean.

Sandblaster. You can rent them at Home Depot or Lowes fairly inexpensively.

power wash it off. I'm a mason contractor in Kansas city. A power washer will take it off.
