You're right - there is no consensus on soy - but in my research the stuff should be avoided if conception is your goal... Why? Because soy contains phytoestrogens which can disrupt your normal hormone balance - and excess estrogen (even plant estrogen) can make the body think it needs to produce more androgens (male hormones).
Soy seems especially bad for overweight women whose fat cells are already producing excess estrogen and whose ovaries are thus making too many androgens, thereby causing cysts to form which inhibit ovulation!
The thyroid, the ovaries, the pituitary gland, your pancreas - and more are involved in the delicate dance that causes one to ovulate and be fertile, so anything that can potentially disrupt hormone balance, like soy, is a 'no no.'
My mother thought I was crazy for breastfeeding my daughter - but I wonder what sort of damage soy formula does to infants and their potential fertility later...

Hi - I am aware that there has been a good deal of research that has shown that "non-fermented" forms of soy do promote "Phytates Desease",.. which is a weakening of the thyroid. ... In my opinion, there has been a significant enough of this scientific research published to promote concern about this.
... If you go to mercola.com,.. you will find a good deal of this information available on a search on his site. The only form of soy products that do not present this problem are "fermented soy",.. which would include such products as "Tempeh" or "Soy Sauce" "Tamari" etc. ............ I would say that it is most likely ok to consume soy once in awhile, but the risk arises when one is consuming it on a regular basis. .................. When you think about it,.. soy foods are a highly processed food. In this sense, soy foods are not "natural" foods. Tofu for example is an extremely processed food and is not like eating a food that has been provided by nature. This all has alot to do with why it may be a problem for a person to consume it on a regular basis. .. Personally, I have met at least 2 individuals who were regular soy milk users, who also had developed weak thyroid problems. Unfortunately, their doctors had not advised them to stop eating soy. .... I am not up on the fertility aspect of this,.. but considering the thyroid problem,.. I would be concerned about consuming non fermented soy in general.

From what I have read I would stay clear of soy based food products due to the likelihood of the function of the thyroid is decreased with increased intake of soy.

I don't think there r any scientific studies linking soy to the thyroid or fertility. I research a lot of biotechs and drug cos.and I've never heard of any link.

I know you have to watch out for soy products and other pseudoestrogens. Stick with whole foods, and if you like soy products - occasionally. Talk to a nutritionist at your local hospital.
