Sony; Panasonic.

Still have "normal" sets, not Plasma or LCD.

Check cnet they have some good reviews and give you pro's and con's of each. There are plenty of other sites around that do this also, if you are serious you might look into getting a subscription to consumer reports online also. Other than that you really have to do a lot of research to get a TV with the features you want at a price you can afford. With the way the prices are dropping I'd wait a couple months for the next years line to come out and then pick up this years model on the cheap.

You are limiting yourself and will pay a lot more than you would have to. When I bought my 60" Pioneer rear projection TV in 1997 (which I bought in Texas), I saved $700. over what I would have had to pay locally.... Colorado Springs, CO
Now your question (and I have been in this for over 50 years).
The best type of TV is the DLP type. The picture looks like a moving photograph, no lines, no pixels. At present they still need a lamp that needs to be replaced every 2,000 to 3,000 hours at about $200. to $300 a piece. Very soon they intend to use them with laser light, and then the bulb problem goes bye bye.
Now DLPs have NO problem with burn in like plasmas have, and can't lose pixels the way LCDs do.
And with 1080p (1080 lines with progressive scan) the quality is the highest available.
Based on my experience with similar equipment, I would expect an average life expectancy of more than 10 years. 15 years should be no problem.
Go to Circuit City to see the difference in the picture quality, and I know you'll agree.
