Back in the day, a closing pitcher was very important. A starter would go 7-8 innings and then the closer would come in for 2-3 innings. Thats when the real closing role was real. Now a days, a closer can come in for the last out and get the save. I believe it is an important role in baseball and the closer must be good, but the way the game has evolved into starters, relievers, set up men who get holds, and then the closer, i think the game has changed a lot and the save isnt as great as it once was.

They aren't what they used to be. Closers used to go 2-3 innings. Now its considered being an iron man getting a 4-5 out save.

I think it's a great stat. The only way I think they could improve on it is to use the stat save percentage instead of just save. Some guys have a lot of saves so it sounds like they're great, but when you look they have a lot of blown saves too.

They are very overrated. Managers misuse their best relievers to save a three run lead rather than use them in tied games.

the save is a pretty overrated statistic, but then not every good reliever has the ability to close down games (ie: Latroy Hawkins)

overrated? yes, but not stupid.

I like em. Need some kind of stat there to seperate them from the rest. It is easier to understand saves then ERA.

They are what they are. It's part of the game. Without a great closer you can't win in this league. It's not stupid, boxing is stupid!!
